Training and Using the Cudgel and Walking Stick

17th October 2026, 10 am to 4 pm

Please see the video below for a brief demonstration of how we train with the cudgel or walking stick. You can expand and watch the video full screen when you have opened it.

Even in a supposedly disarmed society sticks are always available. A stick which reaches from the hand to the ground is basically a walking stick and can be used for self defence if you know what you are doing with it. The cudgel, or walking stick length weapon, is one of the traditional weapons of Stav and this training day will be devoted to working with this weapon.

As well as practising the Runic Stances We will look at:

  • Personal training with the cudgel for exercise and building skills
  • Dealing with strikes
  • Dealing with thrusts
  • Dealing with an unarmed opponent or one armed with a knife or item such as a broken bottl
  • Applying the five principles of Stav with the cudgel
  • Working with the principle of AIM, action, intention, and movement, and the principle of chaos points
  • Bring your own walking stick if you have one, or all necessary equipment can be provided.
