Self–defence Training in Beverley

Monday evenings 8 until 9 pm

Norwood Methodist Church Hall, Norwood, Beverley, HU17 9HN, UK

Instructor: Graham Butcher, Stav teacher with 30 years experience and black belt in Lee Style Whu Shu. Graham also holds a Geoff Thompson level 2 self protection instructor certificate, and is registered and insured with the British Combat Association. Please watch the video above in which Graham explains and demonstrates some of the principles we will be exploring. (You can watch it full screen once you have opened it).

What is realistic self–defence?

  • Firstly, if you are sorting a problem out by hitting someone then something has gone seriously wrong. Self–defence may require some kind of physical contact but the force should be minimal and appropriate.
  • Secondly, training needs to be very simple, nothing complicated ever works in high pressure situations.
  • Thirdly, real self–defence is primarily based on cultivating genuine awareness of ourselves and of the world in which we live. Then, using this awareness, we need to manage distance from potential threats. Every threat has a zone in which we could potentially suffer harm. Recognise and stay out of that zone, and you should be safe. Or, when necessary, enter the zone and take control of the situation.
  • How will this class teach self-defence?

  • Each session begin with with gentle exercises to cultivate an awareness of ourselves and the ability to move efficiently.
  • Each class will also include the 16 Stav stances for improving posture, cultivating deep and natural breathing, and gently stretching and toning the body
  • Most sessions will include training and practice with the walking stick or cudgel (basically a stick which is long enough to reach from your hand to the floor). Cudgel training is a very effective way of developing coordination, as well as judgement of distance and timing.
  • Through cudgel training we also learn how to use and defend against weapons. Please see the video clip below for an idea of how we train with the cudgel.
  • We will practice a simple method for reading and managing distance from a potential threat.
  • We will work with some practical drills for managing the three most likely self defence problems, breaking free, preventing entry, and controlling a threat to other people, should it be necessary.
  • Please see the video below for a brief demonstration of how we train with the cudgel or walking stick. You can expand and watch the video full screen when you have opened it.
